"Service to others is the rent you pay for room here on earth" Muhammed Ali
Many of us are blessed beyond measure. When we consistently take time to understand how fortunate we are, gratitude takes precedence over most problems we deem important. When gratitude and service hold hands something magical happens. You stop looking for things to do and you start finding what needs to be done.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
At the end of our short journey on this planet, you will not remember what you attained. Material possessions come and go, but service to others enriches our lives in a way that can't be measured for its value is priceless and spent in exchanges of love.
"Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living." Albert Einstein
What is this life worth? It's a tough question albeit a good one. Contemplate it more and in the course of your contemplation volunteer for an organization close to your heart. You'll learn more about yourself than any book or person can teach.
"Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." Dali Lama
Our non-profit roots started in San Francisco, CA. Not only is homelessness rampant here but it has become an epidemic of seismic proportions. Even if you can't immediately help those in need, a smile or gesture of good will in acknowledgment will go along way. The difference between those with little and those with a lot is often times luck.
When I was a boy, I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people that are helping." Fred Rogers
The world is beautiful but it's also a scary place. Violence in all forms is happening and while it's important to stay informed, it's up to you to help. At times we look at the world's problems like a messy house and it seems overwhelming to clean everything, but all we have to do is just pick up one piece of garbage to make a difference. Each one, teach one was a phrase used during slavery by African Americans. When one person learned to read, it was his or her responsibility to teach another. All of us have been helped and so it's our duty to carry that good fortune forward by helping others.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in others." Mahatma Gandhi
Finding ourselves in service to others brings the term unity into experience. The more you help others, the more you come to know that we're not all that different.
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." Mother Teresa
We have this picture of service helping only the needy, but to be of service to others requires no prior planning. It means smiling and the grocery clerk, calling a friend or relative for no reason, picking up garbage on the street or giving your seat on the bus to the elderly and mothers.
In closing, find an organization in or around your community. There is always someone who needs help. We all have busy lives and while it's important to attend to our responsibilities, we should have an honest dialogue with ourselves and ask, can I help someone in need?
